Rewrites README.md from scratch against the code on next, for #327: use, deployment, design, the settings reference, then development and testing. The ### Configuration heading and the one-item-per-setting list stay as TestReadmeNamesEverySetting reads them; the test is unchanged. AGENTS.md and TODO.md have one-line verdicts on the issue and are not changed.

Code versus old text:

  • The old text wrote the request ID header as X-Request-ID; the code sends X-Request-Id.
  • The old text left out the X-Pixa-Cache response header and the 300-second Retry-After of the maintenance 503; both are in the code.
  • The old text said the generator page answers 400 for a scaled side above 8192 or an oversized AVIF; the code refuses those only when the URL is requested.
  • The old text capped the wait for an upstream connection at 10 seconds; only the shared upstream_connections wait is capped.

Disclosures:

  • The three example signatures were recomputed and match.
  • libvips 8.16.1 in the shipped image is the first author's check, not repeated.
  • The memory, temp-file and timing figures and the upaas claims come from the old text and code comments, not re-measured; the JPEG, PNG, GIF and decode times have no code comment.
  • The IPv4-mapped matching rule is stated once, in the Configuration preamble, as the settings test ends the list at the first blank line.
  • About 800 words more than on next; the built-in blocked ranges, the form's fields and the encode times are listed in full.

FAIL: needs-rework. This is a review of README.md for #327. The sentences below fail the issue's rules, and some statements do not match the code on next.

Sentences a newcomer has to read twice

  1. Routes, intro: "A path in this list asked with a method the list does not give answers 405." The verb comes last. Acceptable: "A listed path answers 405 to any method the list does not give for it."
  2. Routes, intro: the three sentences about the CORS preflight come before the route list. That puts an edge case before the main rule. Acceptable: move them after the list.
  3. Deployment, the proxy list: "with trusted_proxies naming the address its requests reach pixa from." The clauses are stacked, and "its" is unclear. Acceptable: "trusted_proxies must hold the proxy's address as pixa sees it."
  4. Limits, "The client address": "the client address comes from X-Forwarded-For only when the address pixa sees the request come from is in trusted_proxies." Acceptable: "pixa takes the client address from X-Forwarded-For only when the request arrives from an address in trusted_proxies."
  5. Deployment, shutdown: "pixa then writes the last-used times of cached images that still wait to be written". This reads as if the images wait to be written. Acceptable: "pixa then saves the last-used times it has not yet written (see Storage), and exits."
  6. Running under upaas, PIXA_CACHE_MAX_BYTES: "So the cache can grow to three quarters or more of the space they all have left, and to all of it when that is 500 MiB or less." It is not clear what "they all" and "that" refer to. Acceptable: two plain sentences, one for the 75% and one for the 500 MiB case.
  7. Running under upaas, Memory: "It is the most resident memory grew while pixa processed one 8192x8192 source, …" The opening misleads the reader. Acceptable: "It is the largest rise in resident memory measured while pixa saved one 8192x8192 source to each output format at full size."
  8. The format auto, item 4: "when the first of image/jpeg, image/* and */* that it names allows it". "First" could mean first in the header. The code uses the most specific entry. Acceptable: "when the most specific of image/jpeg, image/* and */* that the header names has a q above 0".
  9. Encrypted URLs, the 400 list: "the source URL would be fetched written another way (below)." Acceptable: "pixa would fetch the source URL in another form (below)."
  10. Encrypted URLs: "pixa fetches a source URL only as it was written." This is false as written: the sentences that follow show pixa re-encoding paths. Acceptable: drop it. The next sentence already states the rule.
  11. Encrypted URLs: "A path holding %2F, which pixa would fetch as /, or (, which it would fetch as %28, is another". The verb comes after two inserted clauses. Acceptable: one short sentence for each example.
  12. Limits, Timeouts: "A request waiting for a shared conversion that stops this way is answered 503 …". It is unclear what "that" refers to. Acceptable: "When a shared conversion stops this way, each request waiting for it is answered 503 server busy, try again later, even if its own downstream_timeout has not ended."
  13. access_control_allow_origin: "Any other value aborts startup, another scheme such as a browser extension's included." Acceptable: "Any other value aborts startup, including an origin with another scheme, such as a browser extension's."
  14. metrics.username: "pixa serves /metrics, and measures requests for it, only when …". This reads as measuring only requests to /metrics, but every request is measured. Acceptable: "pixa serves /metrics, and measures every HTTP request, only when both are set."
  15. Load Test: "It builds the image with script/docker and the load tool, vegeta, from a pinned commit." This reads as if script/docker and vegeta both build the image. Acceptable: two sentences.
  16. Load Test, herd: "each new source image once per client in a row." The fragment cannot be parsed. Acceptable: "every client asks for each new source image at the same moment".
  17. Entrypoints, CACHEBUST paragraph: "every RUN step after that line" points to no line named before it. "Both go test runs" points to two runs never introduced. Acceptable: name the ARG CACHEBUST line. Then say that the test step runs go test, reruns it with -v after a failure, and passes -count=1 both times.

Lists in a sentence that belong in bullets

  1. blocked_networks: "loopback, private, link-local, carrier-grade NAT, benchmarking, NAT64 and the like". The words "and the like" hide multicast, unspecified addresses, 0.0.0.0/8 and 192.0.0.0/24. Acceptable: a bulleted list of every built-in range.
  2. Entrypoints: "These scripts are the standard copies …: script/check, script/cibuild, …" chains seven names. Acceptable: a bulleted list.
  3. Encrypted URLs, step 2: "give the source image's URL, the width and height, the format, quality and fit, and how long the URL lasts." Acceptable: point to the field list below, and make that list cover every field.

Names

  1. pixad appears in Architecture, Entrypoints and Load Test without backticks, and nothing says what it is. The rest of the document says pixa. Acceptable: say once that the server program is pixad and write it in backticks, or write pixa.
  2. These identifiers need backticks: modernc.org/sqlite (Architecture), gofmt (the script/fmt item; it already has them later in the paragraph) and golangci-lint (Entrypoints).

Order

  1. Deployment, last paragraph: the sentences on plain script/bootstrap, Node, Yarn, prettier and "the checks compile pixa in Docker" are about development, and Entrypoints already covers them. Acceptable: keep in Deployment only what running or compiling pixa needs.

False or misleading statements

  1. Limits, Timeouts: "So do the waits for an upstream connection and for a processing slot, up to 10 seconds each." Only the wait for a shared upstream_connections slot is capped at 10 seconds. The wait for an upstream_connections_per_host slot is bounded only by downstream_timeout. Acceptable: say that, here and in "Processing and connections".
  2. Client limits: "An IPv6 client is counted by its /64." The sentence sits under the login limit, but image_requests_per_minute counts IPv6 clients the same way. Acceptable: "Both limits count an IPv6 client by its /64."
  3. maintenance_mode: "answer every request with 503". A CORS preflight still gets 200, as Routes says. Acceptable: "answer every GET and HEAD request with 503".
  4. Sizes: "An AVIF image of more than 16,777,216 pixels is refused". This reads as a limit on AVIF sources, but the code limits AVIF output. Acceptable: "An AVIF output of more than …".
  5. Configuration: "A variable's value is parsed as the same text in the file would be." A variable is read as the same text in quotes would be. PIXA_DEBUG=1 gives true, but debug: 1 in the file aborts startup. Acceptable: add "in quotes".
  6. Configuration: "aborts startup, naming the setting and its variable." When a file value has the wrong type, the error names only the key. Acceptable: "and the error names the setting."
  7. Storage: "When pixa starts, and every five minutes after, it checks the cached files …". This contradicts the spacing rule two paragraphs later. Acceptable: "When pixa starts, and then at the spacing below, …".
  8. Storage: "The database is one SQLite file." In WAL mode, state.sqlite3-wal and state.sqlite3-shm sit beside it while pixa runs. Acceptable: say so.
  9. Entrypoints, script/bootstrap: "Compiling and testing pixa need those." script/test tests in Docker and needs none of them. --cgo also installs pkg-config. Acceptable: "Compiling pixa outside Docker, as make build and script/bench do, needs those."
  10. Entrypoints: "the Makefile targets are thin shims that call them". build, clean, docker-versioned and devserver run their own commands. Acceptable: "Most Makefile targets …".
  11. Rationale: "At run time it needs only the image libraries named under Deployment." HTTPS fetches also need the system's CA certificates. Acceptable: name them.
  12. Getting Started: "The signing key is pixa's one secret." metrics.password is a secret too. Acceptable: "pixa's one required secret".

Dropped from the old text

  1. Limits, Encode times: the old text gave the decode time (up to about 11 seconds) and the encode times for JPEG (1 second), PNG (15), GIF (16) and AVIF without alpha (22). The new text drops all of these, and the PR body does not list them among the cuts. A deployer needs the decode time to see that a conversion fits downstream_timeout. Acceptable: restore them.
  2. Image Metadata: the old text said the image ships libvips 8.16, which is true (8.16.1). Without that, a reader cannot tell that the JPEG XL exception applies to the shipped image. Acceptable: "The Docker image has libvips 8.16, so its JPEG XL output carries this block."
  3. max_concurrent_processing: the old text said the CPU count is GOMAXPROCS. Without that name, a reader cannot tell that setting GOMAXPROCS changes the default. Acceptable: name it.

Disclosures

  • Judgement call: the name of the dependency-injection library in Architecture includes a company name. I read it as the library's name, not as attribution, so it is not a finding.
  • Judgement call: "phase" for the Dockerfile's lint and test stages is kept, because the Dockerfile and Makefile use that word.
  • Judgement call: the PR body, at about 260 words, is read as within "about 250".
  • Unverified: outside packaging (nix, brew, Debian, Ubuntu libvips with JPEG XL), upaas behaviour, Caddy defaults, and the measured memory, temp-file and timing figures.

FAIL: needs-rework. Review of README.md for #327, rebased onto next at 2c90144. The 38 findings of #345 (comment) are addressed; these remain.

False or misleading statements

  1. Limits, "Processing and connections": "If none frees up, it is answered 503 server busy, try again later, unless downstream_timeout has ended first." When downstream_timeout ends during that wait, the answer is the same 503: the code reports a conversion stopped at its deadline as server busy. Acceptable: "If none frees up, it is answered 503 server busy, try again later."
  2. Storage: "After a check ends, the next one waits at least ten times as long as that check took. After a check that took one minute, the next one starts 10 to 15 minutes after that check ended." Checks start only when eviction runs on its five-minute schedule. As written, a check that took a second would repeat ten seconds later, and the reader cannot see where the 15 comes from. Acceptable: "Checks start only when eviction runs, every five minutes. A check starts at the first such run that comes at least ten times as long after the last check ended as that check took."
  3. Limits, Encode times: "At 8192x8192 and quality 85 it would take about 96 seconds." The comment on avifEffort in internal/imageprocessor gives about 96 seconds with an alpha channel and about 52 without. Acceptable: "At 8192x8192 and quality 85 it would take about 96 seconds with an alpha channel, and 52 without."

Sentences a newcomer has to read twice

  1. Configuration, opening paragraph: "A variable's value is read as the same text in quotes in the file would be." The verb comes last, after a stacked phrase. Acceptable: "pixa reads a variable's value as a quoted string in the file. So PIXA_DEBUG=1 turns debug on, but debug: 1 in the file aborts startup."
  2. Encrypted URLs, the form's fields: "The page offers never, 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 30 days and 1 year, and never unless another is chosen." This is a comma chain, and with its verb left out the last "never" reads as part of the list. "The page offers five values, and 85 unless another is chosen." has the same gap. Acceptable: give the choices after a colon or as bullets, then "Never is selected unless another is chosen." and "85 is selected unless another is chosen."
  3. Limits, Timeouts: "A conversion whose request's downstream_timeout has ended stops waiting for a processing slot. Once it has one, it gives the slot back without beginning to encode." "Once it has one" reads as if every conversion gives its slot back. Acceptable: "If its downstream_timeout ends after it has a slot but before it begins to encode, it gives the slot back."

Edge cases before the main rule

  1. Configuration, db_url: "For a state_dir of /, or one starting with //, the default starts with file:////, …" comes before the rules for every db_url: the added busy timeout, keeping the WAL pragma, and an empty value. Acceptable: move it to the end of the item.
  2. Configuration, blocked_networks: the four sentences on the IPv4-mapped form come before "The built-in ranges always apply." Acceptable: the built-in list right after the first sentence, then the IPv4-mapped sentences.
  3. Configuration, trusted_proxies: "An IPv4-mapped entry or address is handled as under blocked_networks." comes before the main advice, "Set this to the address pixa sees for requests that come through your proxy, …". Acceptable: move it to the end of the item.

Terms and names

  1. Storage: "In WAL mode, the default, SQLite keeps …" uses WAL before it is defined; the definition is only under db_url. Acceptable: define it here, as SQLite's write-ahead log.
  2. Not in backticks: "bootstrap, then install-precommit" (script/setup item), "run test, lint, and fmt-check" (script/check item), "Makefile" (Entrypoints opening), the link texts "TODO.md" and "LICENSE", and "prettier" in the script/bootstrap and script/fmt items and the paragraph after the standard copies, where gofmt and golangci-lint have backticks. Acceptable: script/bootstrap, script/install-precommit, script/test, script/lint, script/fmt-check, Makefile, TODO.md, LICENSE, and prettier (or the name Prettier).

Disclosures

  • Judgement call: "Uber fx" in Architecture names a company; read as the library's name, as the first review did. Writing fx alone would avoid it.
  • Judgement call: the Getting Started block runs make build before anything installs libvips; the paragraph after it says what compiling needs, so it is not a finding.
  • Judgement call: "The image routes answer the errors listed for them with a JSON body …" while 499 is listed with no body; the 499 item says so, so not a finding.
  • Judgement call: "effort" (Encode times) and "Eviction" (Deployment) have no definition at first use; read as plain enough.
  • Judgement call: Load Test's "two lines of its own" heads a six-item list that also holds vegeta's lines, and the Latencies item leaves out 90; not findings.
  • Unverified: upaas behaviour, Caddy defaults, outside packaging, and the measured memory, temp-file, decode and encode figures that have no code comment.

Acceptable: "If none frees up, it is answered 503 `server busy, try again later`." 2. A check starts at the first such run that comes at least ten times as long after the last check ended as that check took." 3. Limits, Encode times: "At 8192x8192 and quality 85 it would take about 96 seconds." The comment on `avifEffort` in `internal/imageprocessor` gives about 96 seconds with an alpha channel and about 52 without. Acceptable: "At 8192x8192 and quality 85 it would take about 96 seconds with an alpha channel, and 52 without." ### Sentences a newcomer has to read twice 4. Configuration, opening paragraph: "A variable's value is read as the same text in quotes in the file would be." The verb comes last, after a stacked phrase. Acceptable: "pixa reads a variable's value as a quoted string in the file. So `PIXA_DEBUG=1` turns debug on, but `debug: 1` in the file aborts startup." 5. Encrypted URLs, the form's fields: "The page offers never, 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 30 days and 1 year, and never unless another is chosen." This is a comma chain, and with its verb left out the last "never" reads as part of the list. "The page offers five values, and `85` unless another is chosen." has the same gap. Acceptable: give the choices after a colon or as bullets, then "Never is selected unless another is chosen." and "85 is selected unless another is chosen." 6. Limits, Timeouts: "A conversion whose request's `downstream_timeout` has ended stops waiting for a processing slot. Once it has one, it gives the slot back without beginning to encode." "Once it has one" reads as if every conversion gives its slot back. Acceptable: "If its `downstream_timeout` ends after it has a slot but before it begins to encode, it gives the slot back." ### Edge cases before the main rule 7. Configuration, `db_url`: "For a `state_dir` of `/`, or one starting with `//`, the default starts with `file:////`, …" comes before the rules for every `db_url`: the added busy timeout, keeping the WAL pragma, and an empty value. Acceptable: move it to the end of the item. 8. Configuration, `blocked_networks`: the four sentences on the IPv4-mapped form come before "The built-in ranges always apply." Acceptable: the built-in list right after the first sentence, then the IPv4-mapped sentences. 9. Configuration, `trusted_proxies`: "An IPv4-mapped entry or address is handled as under `blocked_networks`." comes before the main advice, "Set this to the address pixa sees for requests that come through your proxy, …". Acceptable: move it to the end of the item. ### Terms and names 10. Storage: "In WAL mode, the default, SQLite keeps …" uses WAL before it is defined; the definition is only under `db_url`. Acceptable: define it here, as SQLite's write-ahead log. 11. Not in backticks: "bootstrap, then install-precommit" (`script/setup` item), "run test, lint, and fmt-check" (`script/check` item), "Makefile" (Entrypoints opening), the link texts "TODO.md" and "LICENSE", and "prettier" in the `script/bootstrap` and `script/fmt` items and the paragraph after the standard copies, where `gofmt` and `golangci-lint` have backticks. Acceptable: `script/bootstrap`, `script/install-precommit`, `script/test`, `script/lint`, `script/fmt-check`, `Makefile`, [`TODO.md`](TODO.md), [`LICENSE`](LICENSE), and `prettier` (or the name Prettier). ### Disclosures - Judgement call: "Uber fx" in Architecture names a company; read as the library's name, as the first review did. Writing fx alone would avoid it. - Judgement call: the Getting Started block runs `make build` before anything installs libvips; the paragraph after it says what compiling needs, so it is not a finding. - Judgement call: "The image routes answer the errors listed for them with a JSON body …" while 499 is listed with no body; the 499 item says so, so not a finding. - Judgement call: "effort" (Encode times) and "Eviction" (Deployment) have no definition at first use; read as plain enough. - Judgement call: Load Test's "two lines of its own" heads a six-item list that also holds vegeta's lines, and the `Latencies` item leaves out `90`; not findings. - Unverified: upaas behaviour, Caddy defaults, outside packaging, and the measured memory, temp-file, decode and encode figures that have no code comment. Rewrites README.md from scratch against the code on next, for
#327: what pixa is and how to
use it, deployment, design, the settings reference, then development
and testing. The Configuration list keeps one item per setting, as
TestReadmeNamesEverySetting reads it; the test is unchanged. The
statements where the old text disagreed with the code are listed in
the PR body.

All 11 findings of #345 (comment) are addressed, and the dependency-injection library is named fx without a company; 31 further sentences were fixed in the full pass. No finding is rebutted. Finding 8 is met in a different form: the IPv4-mapped rule moved to the Configuration preamble, since TestReadmeNamesEverySetting ends the settings list at the first blank line and no sentence can follow the nested list inside blocked_networks.

FAIL: needs-rework. Review of README.md for #327, rebased onto next at 2c90144. The 11 findings of #345 (comment) are addressed; finding 8 is met in the rework's form (see Disclosures). These remain.

Sentences a newcomer has to read twice

  1. Image URLs, Sizes: "The limit includes orig of an AVIF source, and auto when it chooses AVIF." orig is both a size and a format, so the reader cannot tell which is meant. Acceptable: "The limit also applies to the format orig when the source is AVIF, and to auto when it chooses AVIF."
  2. Limits, Encode times: "No encode within the limits takes more than about 40 seconds of the default downstream_timeout of 60." Acceptable: "No encode within the limits takes more than about 40 seconds. The default downstream_timeout is 60 seconds."
  3. Configuration, access_control_allow_origin: "The origin a browser lets read the responses of /v1/image/ and /v1/e/, sent as the CORS Access-Control-Allow-Origin header." The object of "lets" is left out, so the reader has to rebuild the clause. Acceptable: "The origin whose pages may read the responses of /v1/image/ and /v1/e/ in a browser. pixa sends it as the CORS Access-Control-Allow-Origin header."

Terms and names

  1. Entrypoints, script/precommit: "the go mod tidy guard" is a coined name that does not say what the check does. Acceptable: "run go mod tidy and fail when it changes go.mod or go.sum, then run script/check."
  2. Not in backticks: govips (Limits, under Timeouts and Encode times; Architecture) and vegeta (Load Test, four times), while chi, fx and prettier have them. Acceptable: govips and vegeta.

False or misleading statements

  1. Limits, Encode times: "These times hold at any quality and at 8 or 16 bits per sample." It follows the 96- and 52-second AVIF figures, which the code gives for quality 85 only. The code says "any quality and 8 or 16 bits" only of the 34-second AVIF figure, and "any quality" of WebP and JPEG XL. Acceptable: say it only of the figures it covers, for example "The 34 seconds hold at any quality and at 8 or 16 bits per sample."
  2. Routes, POST /generate: "Answers 400 with the page naming a field that is not valid." The page never checks the format field, so a form with any format gets 200 and a URL. In Encrypted URLs, a fit that "is not one of the five fit modes" is refused, but an empty fit is accepted and served as cover. Acceptable: "Answers 400 with the page naming the field it refused (see Encrypted URLs)." In the fit item: "A form sent with an empty fit, or none, makes a cover URL."
  3. Architecture, Packages: "handlers: the routes, …". The routes are declared in internal/server; handlers holds the functions they call. Acceptable: "handlers: the functions the routes call, which …".

Dropped from the old text

  1. Routes, the CORS paragraph: the old text said a preflight is an OPTIONS request with an Access-Control-Request-Method header. Without that, a reader cannot tell a preflight, which answers 200, from a plain OPTIONS, which answers 405 on a listed path. Acceptable: "It carries an Access-Control-Request-Method header." after "The preflight is the OPTIONS request the browser sends first."

Disclosures

  • Judgement call: finding 8 of the second review is met. The IPv4-mapped paragraph follows "An address matches a range that contains it", the rule it narrows, so it does not come before its main rule. A paragraph after the settings list would also pass the settings test.
  • Judgement call: go.uber.org/fx keeps a company's domain inside the module path; read as an identifier, like github.com/go-chi/chi/v5.
  • Judgement call: "32 characters or longer": the code counts bytes, which comes to the same for the keys openssl rand -base64 32 makes.
  • Judgement call: "q and fit are part of what is cached" is read as plain enough for "part of the variant key".
  • Judgement call: in Limits, "shared" names both the shared work and the upstream_connections pool; the setting named beside it keeps them apart.
  • Judgement call: a request that waited for another request's conversion also gets X-Pixa-Cache: MISS; "made for this request" is read as covering it.
  • Judgement call: the JPEG XL EXIF block also holds a colour space; "Nothing in it comes from the source" still holds.
  • Judgement call: Image URLs does not say that /v1/image/ refuses a .. segment, a segment starting with .. or a NUL byte; the form's 400 list states the first, and the others are rare.
  • Judgement call: at shutdown, a request still running after 5 seconds stops when pixa exits a moment later; "is cut off" is read as true.
  • Unverified: upaas behaviour, Caddy defaults, outside packaging, Docker's gateway addresses, libvips' temporary files, the golangci-lint cache rules, that the scripts match the sneak/prompts copies, and the measured memory, temp-file, decode and encode figures with no code comment (the 22-second AVIF figure among them).
