sneak 03b11e9703 Declare only the tables and columns pixa writes and reads (closes #310)
check / check (push) Waiting to run
Removes output_content and request_cache, which nothing writes, and every
column that was written but never read: the host, path, query, content_type
and fetched_at of source_content, the content_type and created_at of
variant_content, and the status_code, error_message and fetched_at of
negative_cache.

StoreSource no longer takes the fetch result and LookupSource returns only
the source key. StoreVariant no longer takes a content type and
StoreNegative no longer takes a status code or message, so
extractStatusCode and the status constants, which only fed status_code,
are gone. Reconciliation adopts a variant file without opening it, as its
row no longer records a content type. Tests that set or checked a removed
column follow.

clawbot 5f9d624d74 Serve a cache hit with no database read or write (closes #309)
check / check (push) Waiting to run
A hit opens the variant file and nothing else: its content type comes
from the file's first bytes, and a file in no output format is a miss.
Its access time and count, and the access time of a cached source a
miss uses, go without waiting to one background goroutine that writes
them once a second; each kind of access time waits in a channel of
10,000 that drops the rest. Expired negative cache rows are left to
CleanExpired. The .meta files, metaCache, Lookup and golang-lru go,
with their tests; the two reconciliation walks, identical without the
.meta skip, share one. make bench runs a parallel cache hit benchmark
on the host, outside make check.

clawbot a19cca2f34 Store a source the way a variant is stored, one row and one file per source URL (closes #308)
check / check (push) Canceled after 0s
A source is now one source_content row and one file named by its
SourceKey, the SHA-256 of its host, path and query, made as the variant
key is. A store writes the file, then upserts the row, and removes the
file when the row cannot be written; an eviction deletes the row, then
the file, with no lock. source_metadata, the JSON files under
cache/metadata/, MetadataStorage, the content lock, the eviction
transaction and its test hook are gone, as is the reconciliation pass
that dropped a source row whose file is missing. Two source URLs
serving the same bytes store them twice.

Multiple source paths may reference the same content blob; the database tracks
references rather than using filesystem refcounting.
Each source image and each transformed image has one row in the database,
holding its size and when it was last used. Two source URLs that serve the same
bytes are stored twice, once under each URL. A source image is stored by writing
its file and then its row; when the row cannot be written, the file is removed
again.
Source and transformed image files, and the `.meta` file beside each transformed
image, are written under a temporary name, synced to disk, and only then renamed
into place, so a crash leaves no file under its own name with part of its data.
When pixa starts, and every five minutes after, it removes each cached source or
transformed image whose file is empty, or not the size the database records for
it, with a warning naming the file; the next request for it fetches the source
or converts the image again. Looking for those files reads the database once for
every cached file, so pixa skips each five-minute look that would start less
than ten times as long after the last look ended as that look took. After a look
that took one minute, the next one starts 10 to 15 minutes after that look
ended.

pixa's target is 1-5k r/s, which has not been measured at that rate (see Load
Test). Toward it, pixa keeps in memory the content types of the 10,000
transformed images most recently cached or served, so a cache hit on one of them
reads only the image file from disk and not the metadata file stored beside it.
Test). Toward it, a cache hit opens the transformed image's file and nothing
else, and makes no database call. The content type comes from the file's first
bytes, which are those of the format pixa wrote it in; a file whose first bytes
are not those of a format pixa writes is not served, and the image is converted
again. The time the image was last served, which eviction orders by, and the hit
count are handed to a background writer without waiting for it, as are the
counts of misses, fetches and conversions, and the time a miss last used a
cached source image. Once a second that writer writes the waiting times in one
transaction and the counts in one statement. While 10,000 times of transformed
images, or 10,000 of source images, wait to be written, a further one is
dropped, and that image only looks less recently used to eviction.

nothing about the target.
`script/bench` (or `make bench`) measures cache hits alone, without the network
and with no pixad process: a Go benchmark in `internal/handlers` serves one
cached image through the `/v1/image/` handler from as many goroutines at once as
the machine has CPUs, and reports the hits served per second as `hits/s`. Each
run starts with an empty cache and an empty database, a SQLite file of its own,
and puts the image in the cache before it measures. The benchmark fails if
serving the hits ran any statement on the database. Like the load test it is not
part of `script/check`. It runs Go on the host, as the load test does, and
compiles pixa there, so it needs the C compiler and libraries that
`script/bootstrap --cgo` installs, but not Docker.

# Completed Steps
- 2026-10-21 the schema file declares only the tables and columns pixa writes
and reads (closes #310): `output_content` and `request_cache` are gone, and so
are the columns nothing read: the host, path, query, `content_type` and
`fetched_at` of `source_content`, the `content_type` and `created_at` of
`variant_content`, and the `status_code`, `error_message` and `fetched_at` of
`negative_cache`. `StoreSource` no longer takes the fetch result,
`LookupSource` returns only the source key, `StoreVariant` no longer takes a
content type, `StoreNegative` no longer takes a status code or message, and
reconciliation adopts a variant file without reading its first bytes.
- 2026-10-21 a cache hit makes no database call (closes #309): `Service.Get`
opens the variant file with `Cache.GetVariant` and nothing else, with no
existence check first. The content type comes from the file's first bytes; a
file whose first bytes are not those of an output format, SVG included, is a
miss, and the variant is made again. A hit hands its access time to a channel
that holds up to 10,000 and drops the rest, and its hit count to the pending
counts, without waiting; every count is now a pending count. A miss that finds
a cached source hands that source's access time to a second such channel. The
goroutine `StartPendingCountWrites` starts writes, once a second, the access
times in one transaction and the counts in one `UPDATE`;
`StopPendingCountWrites` writes what is left once at shutdown and logs
separately the access times and the counts it could not write.
`checkNegativeCache` no longer deletes an expired row; `CleanExpired` in the
eviction goroutine does. The `.meta` files, `VariantMeta`, `LoadWithMeta`,
`variantContentTypeFromSidecar`, `metaCache`, `Lookup` and `golang-lru` are
gone. `make bench` (`script/bench`) runs `BenchmarkHandleImage_CacheHits` with
Go on the host after `script/bootstrap --cgo`, outside `make check`.
- 2026-10-21 a source is stored the way a variant is (closes #308): one
`source_content` row and one file per source URL, the file named by the
source's `SourceKey`, the SHA-256 of its host, path and query made as the
variant key is, under `cache/sources/`. A store writes the file, then the row,
and removes the file when the row cannot be written; an eviction deletes the
row, then the file, with no lock and no transaction. `source_metadata`, the
JSON files under `cache/metadata/`, `MetadataStorage` and the content lock are
gone. Two source URLs that serve the same bytes now store them twice.
- 2026-10-21 one image request type instead of five (closes #307): the new
package `internal/imagerequest`, which imports no other package of pixa, holds
`imagerequest.Request` with its two parts, `Source` (host, path and query) and
