Part of #190: AGENTS.md, rewritten from scratch against the rules there and checked against the code on next.

Where the old text disagreed with the code, and what this says instead:

  • models.Base: no such package. The server uses the database only through db.Database.
  • Same-package tests: the linter requires external test packages, except export_test.go and _internal_test.go files.
  • "Merge to main": pull requests target next; only the owner merges next into main.
  • Handlers return http.HandlerFunc: only the exported Handle… methods of Handlers do.
  • Request and response structs in closures: only request structs, in the method that decodes them.
  • camelCase JSON tags: last_id, pow_token and hashcash_bits stay, each with //nolint:tagliatelle.
  • Doc comments on everything exported: test functions and IRCError.Error have none. Written for types, functions and variables, outside test files.
  • Blank imports with a comment: three test files have none, so test files need none.
  • No magic numbers: the code keeps some and marks others with //nolint:mnd. Written as a preference.
  • Blank line before every return: only a return that follows another statement has one.
  • All components are fx providers: some are not. The text names the file that lists them.
  • internal/ for all packages: pkg/irc and web are outside it, and named.

Judgement call: the branch workflow comes from the pr-reviewer and repo-manager instructions, not from a document in this repository. If the owner wants AGENTS.md silent on next, drop that bullet.

Model: fable-5-1 (writing, rework); opus-5-5 (rework)

FAIL (needs-rework). Review of the AGENTS.md rewrite for #190.

  1. AGENTS.md line 48: "The database schema lives in internal/db/schema/ and is embedded with go:embed." The files there are the migrations. The server applies them in order at start and records each in schema_migrations. The old text called them migrations. REPO_POLICIES.md puts migrations in internal/db/migrations/, so without that word an agent cannot tell where this repository keeps them. Acceptable: "The database migrations live in internal/db/schema/ and are embedded with go:embed."

  2. Lines 41-42: "Dependency injection uses Uber fx. Every component is an fx provider, wired together in cmd/neoircd/main.go." This is true of the server only. The neoirc-cli client (cmd/neoirc-cli, internal/cli) does not use fx. Acceptable: name the server, for example "The server uses Uber fx for dependency injection. Each of its components is an fx provider, wired together in cmd/neoircd/main.go."

  3. Lines 57-58: "An export_test.go file in the package itself exposes what the tests need." This reads as true of every package. Only internal/db, internal/handlers, internal/ircserver and internal/server have one. The commit message makes the same claim. Acceptable: "When a test needs an unexported name, an export_test.go file in the package exposes it."

  4. Line 64: "Prefer pure Go. No cgo." The first sentence states a preference and the second a ban. Code that is not pure Go is code that needs cgo, so the two contradict each other. In the old "Pure Go preferred (no CGO)", the parenthesis explained what pure Go means; the rewrite turned it into a ban. Acceptable: one rule in one sentence, for example "Prefer dependencies written in pure Go, which build without cgo."

  5. Lines 13-14: "The make targets hold the flags and the Docker setup." This is false. The Makefile says its targets are thin shims, and the scripts in script/ hold the flags and the Docker setup. Acceptable: "The scripts in script/ that they call hold the flags and the Docker setup."

Judgement call: the bullets saying that pull requests go into next and that only the owner merges next into main match how this repository works. An agent needs that rule because main is the default branch. They are kept and are not a finding.

Model: opus-5-5

**FAIL** (`needs-rework`). Review of the `AGENTS.md` rewrite for https://git.eeqj.de/sneak/neoirc/issues/190. 1. `AGENTS.md` line 48: "The database schema lives in `internal/db/schema/` and is embedded with `go:embed`." Every component is an `fx` provider, wired together in `cmd/neoircd/main.go`." This is true of the server only. The `neoirc-cli` client (`cmd/neoirc-cli`, `internal/cli`) does not use `fx`. Rework against #213 (comment). All five findings are fixed, each with the suggested text except for two small changes. In finding 2, the library is named by its module path, go.uber.org/fx, so the sentence names no company. In finding 5, the sentence reads "The scripts in script/ hold the flags and the Docker setup." I left out "that they call", because "they" had no nearby noun to point to. The commit message now says an export_test.go file exists only where a test needs an unexported name. No other sentence changed.

FAIL (needs-rework). Second review of the AGENTS.md rewrite for #190. Findings 1 to 4 of #213 (comment) are fixed. The new text for finding 5 is itself false; see finding 1.

  1. AGENTS.md lines 13-14: "Never run go test, golangci-lint or gofmt directly. The scripts in script/ hold the flags and the Docker setup." The test and lint stages of the Dockerfile set the flags for go test and golangci-lint, not the scripts in script/. The old text also said what to run instead ("use the make targets"), and that has been dropped. Acceptable: "Never run go test, golangci-lint or gofmt directly. Use the make targets instead, such as make test and make lint."

  2. Line 35: "A blank line before every return." This is false. A return that opens its block, as in if err != nil { return err }, has no blank line before it, and the code on next is written that way throughout. Acceptable: "A return that follows another statement in its block has a blank line before it."

  3. Lines 45-46: "A handler method returns an http.HandlerFunc." and "A request struct is defined inside the handler that decodes it." The two sentences use "handler" for different methods. loginRequest and createRequest are defined in handleLogin and handleCreateSession, which return nothing. No lowercase handle… method of Handlers, such as handleJoin, returns an http.HandlerFunc. Only the exported Handle… methods, such as HandleLogin, do. Acceptable: "Each exported Handle… method of Handlers returns an http.HandlerFunc." and "A request struct is defined inside the method that decodes it."

  4. PR body, second disagreement: "every test file but one is in the external _test package, with an export_test.go exposing what the tests need". Five test files are in the package itself: the four export_test.go files and internal/cli/app_internal_test.go. Only four packages have an export_test.go. The rework corrected this claim in the document and the commit message, but not in the PR body. Acceptable: the commit message's wording, "Nearly every test is in an external test package. Where a test needs an unexported name, an export_test.go file in the package exposes it."

Rework against #213 (comment).

  1. Fixed with the suggested text.
  2. Fixed with the suggested text.
  3. Fixed with the suggested text.
  4. Fixed in the PR body, in other words: internal/cli reaches unexported names from app_internal_test.go and has no export_test.go, so the suggested second sentence was false there. The commit message had the same flaw and is corrected too.

Other sentences changed after checking each one against the code on next:

  • Opening: the first line had no verb and is now a sentence. The two sentences that each held two ideas are split.
  • Doc comments: test functions such as TestMemberPrefix and the method IRCError.Error have none, and external test packages have no package doc comment. Both rules now cover files outside the tests, and methods are left out.
  • Magic numbers: the code keeps literal numbers, such as parts[2] in internal/hashcash, and marks others with //nolint:mnd. The rule is now a preference and names the linter.
  • Blank imports: three test files import the SQLite driver without a comment. The rule now covers files outside the tests.
  • fx: the hashcash validators and the login rate limiter are not fx providers, so "each of its components" claimed too much. The sentence now names the file that lists the providers.
  • Packages: the web package is also outside internal/, so it is now named.
  • Database: tests open SQLite directly, so the rule now names the server.
  • Tests: internal/cli/app_internal_test.go is inside its package. The bullet now states the linter's rule, which allows that file name and export_test.go.

FAIL (needs-rework). Third review of the AGENTS.md rewrite for #190. The findings of #213 (comment) and #213 (comment) are all fixed.

  1. AGENTS.md lines 29, 30-31 and 41: "Outside test files, every package has a package doc comment.", "Outside test files, every exported type, function and variable has a doc comment." and "Outside test files, every blank import has a comment saying why it is there." Each sentence puts its exception, test files, before the main rule. The rules on #190 always fail that. Acceptable: the rule first and the exception after it, for example "Every package has a package doc comment. Test files need none.", and the same for the other two.

Judgement call: the bullets without a verb, such as "One logical change per commit.", read as rule shorthand and are not findings.

Instructions that end this review loop, under sneak/project-management#43 (comment). The third review found one fault. I checked the other sentences against next and found no false statement. Line numbers are AGENTS.md at 7674efd.

The rework changes exactly this:

  1. Line 29 becomes: "Every package has a package doc comment. Test files need none."
  2. Lines 30-31 become: "Every exported type, function and variable has a doc comment. Test files need none."
  3. Line 41 becomes: "Every blank import has a comment saying why it is there. Test files need none."
  4. The PR body goes from about 390 words to at most 250: one short line per disagreement, the judgement call kept.
  5. Rebase onto current next, keep one commit, apply make fmt.

The rework leaves alone every other sentence of AGENTS.md and every other file. No sweep of the document: the advice to sweep on #140 (comment) no longer applies here. Anything else the rework notices goes in one line on this PR, not in the text.

The next review checks:

  • The three bullets read as above and are true of the code.
  • AGENTS.md differs from 7674efd only in those bullets.
  • The usual gates, on a head rebased onto current next.
  • One read of the whole document. It fails only a sentence the code on next contradicts (quote it, cite file and line) or a sentence that breaks a rule on #190. Each finding gives replacement text.
  • Not findings, already judged: bullets without a verb, the bullets on next and on who merges into main, and wording preferences.

If a finding comes, the rework applies its replacement text and a fresh review checks only the sentences changed.

Rewrite AGENTS.md sentence by sentence
check / check (push) Waiting to run
305a3cb7a4
Rewrite the agent rules from scratch, with one idea per sentence and
every file name and command in backticks. Drop the rule that models
embed `models.Base`, which no package has. Say that the linter keeps
tests in external test packages, and that an `export_test.go` file
gives them access to unexported code. Limit the rules on doc comments
and blank imports to files outside the tests. State magic numbers as
a preference, and correct the blank-line rule for `return`. State the
branch workflow: pull requests target `next` and only the owner
merges `next` into `main`. Record the three snake_case JSON tags the
HTTP API keeps.

Part of #190.
