The README's "Development workflow" (items 1, 4 and 8) and "For LLMs" sections said work branches off main and merges into main. They now say:
work branches from next, and every pull request targets next;
make check must be green before a pull request is merged into next;
the repository manager squash-merges reviewed pull requests into next;
only sneak merges next into main;
main and next are always green.
TODO.md gets a Completed Steps entry.
Left unchanged as outside this issue: "Never force-push to main" in "For LLMs", and item 7's statement that the final history shows tests landing before the implementation, which a squash-merge into next no longer keeps.
