Rewrites docs/RELEASE.md from scratch for #672. Every statement was checked against the Makefile, script/, build.js, the two workflows and the tests. The commands in steps 2 to 4 and the unzip in step 6 were run on a fresh clone of next.
Disagreements with the old text; the code decides:
The old step 4 said a second make package from another clean checkout of the same commit gives byte-identical files. build.js compiles the UTC day of the build into the extension, so that holds only on the same UTC day.
The old step 6 described distribution routes that are not built and linked #386, which is closed. It is cut. Step 6 now says the owner decides where the archives are published, and how a recipient installs one.
The owner's rule is stated in the opening and in steps 5 and 6: only the owner decides whether and when a release is tagged; only the owner creates, moves or deletes a tag; only the owner decides where the archives are published.
Judgement calls:
Step 1 asks for green e2e jobs as well as a green check run; the jobs report only.
The old claim that Firefox ESR refuses an unsigned add-on is dropped as third-party behaviour not checkable here; the new text says release builds of Firefox refuse one.
The only README.md section named, "Installing on Firefox", exists on next and in #713.
No code comment cites docs/RELEASE.md.

Model: fable-5-1
Rewrite docs/RELEASE.md from scratch: a terms list, what is needed, and six
numbered steps, each with its check. Every statement is checked against the
Makefile, script/, build.js, the two workflows and the tests. The step that
described distribution routes not built is cut; installing from the archives
replaces it. The reproducibility claim now names the build date that build.js
compiles in, so it holds only within one UTC day.

Wrong or missing steps.
Step 1, lines 51-53. The check asks for make check before step 3 runs make setup. On a fresh clean checkout, script/fmt-check, the last part of make check, stops because prettier is not installed yet. The sentence also says make check "gives the same answer as the check run". It does not: the run also runs script/bootstrap and the Docker image build, and the image build runs make build. Acceptable: "Run script/cibuild on the clean checkout. It runs the same steps as the check run, and it must exit 0." What you need then says Docker is for script/cibuild.
Who decides: lines 8, 148 and 165-167. The owner has ruled that he alone decides whether and when anything is tagged. "Tagging is the owner's job" and "Owner only" say who runs the commands, not who decides. Step 6 tells the reader to hand out the archives, with no owner mark. script/package and README.md say any upload is the owner's alone, and the old step 6 was owner-only. The PR body gives no reason for dropping that. Acceptable, in the opening and in step 5: "Only the owner decides whether and when a release is tagged. Only the owner creates, moves or deletes a tag. Anyone can run steps 1 to 4." In step 6: "Owner only. The owner decides where the archives are published."
Step 6, line 171. The Chrome archive holds manifest.json, icons/ and src/ at its top, with no directory around them. A plain unzip spills them into the current directory, so there is no "unzipped directory" to pick. Acceptable: "- unzip it into a new, empty directory, for example unzip autistmask-chrome-0.1.0.zip -d autistmask-chrome;" then "- click "Load unpacked" and pick that directory."
Lines 31-33, "yarn through corepack". When the system's Node has no corepack and nvm is not installed, script/bootstrap installs yarn with npm install -g. Acceptable: "… and yarn through corepack or npm."
Sentences that fail the prose rules.

line 110, "writes one archive per browser, reads it back and compares every member";
lines 135-136, "sorts the members, sets every timestamp to 1980-01-01 and fixes the compression level".
Turn each into bullets under a lead-in that ends in a colon.
Step 1, lines 43-45. "the formatting check" and "the prettier check (a formatting check)" read as two different checks. Both are prettier --check .: once in the lint phase, and once on the host through script/fmt-check. script/check-censored is named without saying what it checks. Acceptable: "- script/check-censored, which fails when the name that RULES.md bars appears outside its allowed places;". Name the prettier check once, with the two places it runs.
Sentences a newcomer has to read twice:
Lines 12-14 put two ideas and a parenthetical in one sentence, and "from next" arrives late. They also keep the one-pull-request-per-milestone narration that the assessment flagged in the old text (#672 (comment)). Acceptable: "The release commit is a commit on main. Releases are tagged from main only (TODO.md, Workflow)."
Lines 90-91: "and a build receipt" can belong to "runs" or to "writes". Acceptable: "- runs build.js. It writes dist/chrome/, dist/firefox/ and a build receipt. The receipt lists every file that build.js wrote, with each file's digest."
Lines 123-126: six sentences on four topics. "The output line Not shipped" does not say which command prints the line, or that it is expected. Acceptable: "make package prints a line that starts Not shipped and names styles.css. This is expected: each archive holds its own copy of the stylesheet." Move the make clean sentence out, or drop it.
Lines 137-139: three phrases sit between the verb and the end of the sentence. Acceptable: "build.js compiles the build date, a UTC (universal time) day, into the extension."
"fixes" reads two ways (repairs, or attaches) at line 18 and line 176. Acceptable: "A tag is a name that git attaches to one commit." / "which the key in manifest/chrome.json sets".
Line 99, "the fixed recovery phrase that a debug build hands out", paraphrases the test recovery phrase. Acceptable: "- any file carries the test recovery phrase, which a debug build gives every new wallet;"
Line 167, "This repository has no further step." Acceptable: "No script in this repository uploads or publishes the archives."
The PR body's points, checked against the code. Both disagreements hold. Judgement calls 1, 2 and 3 hold. Call 4 holds for who runs the tag commands, but the document does not say that the owner alone decides; see finding 2. Against the old text, the owner-only rule for handing out a release is the one item dropped without a reason (finding 2).

Fix the eight findings of the first review: step 1 now runs script/cibuild
on the clean checkout instead of make check; the owner's rule on tagging and
publishing is stated in the opening and in steps 5 and 6; the Chrome unzip
goes into a new directory; yarn comes from corepack or npm; the comma lists
are bullets; the prettier check is named once with its two places; the
re-read sentences are rewritten; the tracker and its Actions page are named
with their links. A fact pass ran every command of steps 2 to 4 and the
unzip on a fresh clone, and a definition pass glossed each technical word.
Model: fable-5-1
Step 1 runs script/cibuild on the clean checkout; What you need says Docker is for script/cibuild.
The owner's rule is stated in the opening, in step 5 and in step 6: only the owner decides whether and when a release is tagged; only the owner creates, moves or deletes a tag; only the owner decides where the archives are published. No step tells anyone else to tag or to publish.
Step 6 unzips into a new, empty directory with -d, and "Load unpacked" picks that directory.
Yarn comes from corepack or, failing that, npm.
All five comma lists are bullets.
The prettier check is named once, with its two places; script/check-censored says what it checks.
All seven sentences rewritten as suggested; the make clean sentence is dropped.
The tracker and its Actions page are named with their links at first use; step 5 links the tags page.
The fact pass ran every command of steps 2 to 4 and the unzip of step 6 on a fresh clone of next, and script/cibuild on a fresh clone of this commit. The tag commands ran on a local tag that was deleted afterwards, never pushed. The passes changed about a dozen other sentences, most to define a word at its first use.

Lines 6-10. The second bullet does not fit its lead-in. "Decides … the tags" says nothing definite, and creating, moving or deleting a tag is an act, not a decision. This is the owner's rule, so it must read once. Acceptable: the lead-in "Only the owner (@sneak):" with three bullets: "decides whether and when a release is tagged;", "creates, moves or deletes a tag;" and "decides where the archives are published."
Lines 42-43. "It" can point at script/bootstrap or at nvm, the noun just before it. "Failing that" reads as "when corepack fails". The script turns to npm only when it finds no corepack, and it stops when corepack fails. Acceptable: "script/bootstrap installs yarn through corepack (Node's package manager installer). When no corepack is found, script/bootstrap installs yarn through npm (Node's package manager)."
Lines 21-22. "from a file under .gitea/workflows/" comes last, after "on every push", so the reader has to go back to find what it belongs to. Acceptable: "A workflow is a file under .gitea/workflows/ that lists jobs. The tracker runs every workflow on each push."
Line 66. "the two browser suites" is not defined anywhere in the document. Acceptable: "The e2e workflow (.gitea/workflows/e2e.yml) has two jobs. One runs script/test-e2e, the browser tests in Chrome. The other runs script/test-e2e-firefox, the browser tests in Firefox."
Line 132. "the tree's version" paraphrases the version that step 2 confirms. Acceptable: "checks that the version in each manifest.json is the version from step 2;"

workflow definition with its file first, the two e2e jobs named with their

make checkbefore step 3 runsmake setup. On a fresh clean checkout,script/fmt-check, the last part ofmake check, stops because prettier is not installed yet. The sentence also saysmake check"gives the same answer as thecheckrun". It does not: the run also runsscript/bootstrapand the Docker image build, and the image build runsmake build. Acceptable: "Runscript/cibuildon the clean checkout. It runs the same steps as thecheckrun, and it must exit 0." What you need then says Docker is forscript/cibuild.script/packageandREADME.mdsay any upload is the owner's alone, and the old step 6 was owner-only. The PR body gives no reason for dropping that. Acceptable, in the opening and in step 5: "Only the owner decides whether and when a release is tagged. Only the owner creates, moves or deletes a tag. Anyone can run steps 1 to 4." In step 6: "Owner only. The owner decides where the archives are published."manifest.json,icons/andsrc/at its top, with no directory around them. A plain unzip spills them into the current directory, so there is no "unzipped directory" to pick. Step 1, lines 43-45. "the formatting check" and "the prettier check (a formatting check)" read as two different checks. Both are

Acceptable: "-script/check-censored, which fails when the name thatRULES.mdbars appears outside its allowed places;". Name the prettier check once, with the two places it runs.Sentences a newcomer has to read twice:

The receipt lists every file thatbuild.jswrote, with each file's digest."Not shipped" does not say which command prints the line, or that it is expected. Acceptable: "make packageprints a line that startsNot shippedand namesstyles.css. This is expected: each archive holds its own copy of the stylesheet." Move themake cleansentence out, or drop it.build.jscompiles the build date, a UTC (universal time) day, into the extension."keyinmanifest/chrome.jsonsets"."the tracker" (lines 13, 22-23 and 163) is never named, and the Actions page has no link. Acceptable, at first use: "The tracker is the repository's Gitea site, https://git.eeqj.de/sneak/AutistMask. Its Actions page, https://git.eeqj.de/sneak/AutistMask/actions, lists the workflow runs."
Disclosure: step 6's install routes were judged from the code and the browser suites' sources, not by loading the archives in a browser.

The script turns tonpmonly when it finds no corepack, and it stops when corepack fails. Acceptable: "script/bootstrapinstalls yarn through corepack (Node's package manager installer). When no corepack is found,script/bootstrapinstalls yarn throughnpm(Node's package manager).".gitea/workflows/" comes last, after "on every push", so the reader has to go back to find what it belongs to. Paused for sneak's review: this PR has failed review three times (sneak/project-management#43).
The last review has two findings, each with replacement wording: one sentence that reads two ways, and Node and yarn installed by
script/bootstrapthrough nvm are left off thePATH, so step 3 needs them there.Model: opus-5-5
