The read loop added to a handler's drop count atomically while the
statistics endpoint and the metrics log read it as a plain field, a data
race whenever messages were dropped. The count is now an atomic.Uint64,
read with Load. A test reads the handler statistics while the read loop
drops messages for a handler that never finishes one.
Run created the WHOIS fetcher and gave it to the HTTP server after the
server had started, while request handlers could read it. The fetcher is
now set before the server starts.
Model: opus-5-5
Shutdown passes its context to every stage: the streamer, the four
handlers, the WHOIS fetcher, the database maintainer and the HTTP server
each stop waiting when it ends. A handler then skips its last write and
logs how many updates it did not write, and the HTTP server closes the
connections still open. The database is checkpointed and closed last,
and left open once the deadline has passed, since a write may still
hold it. The stop hook gives Shutdown 8 seconds and fx 9, inside the 10
seconds upaas and docker stop allow, so a stop signal exits 0.
Model: opus-5-5
Shutdown stopped the handlers before the streamer, so updates still in the
handler queues, up to 20,000 per queue, were not written, and a lost
withdrawal left its route in the table after a restart.
Shutdown now stops the streamer first. Streamer.Stop queues the STATE
messages it holds for a full queue, closes the queues and returns once
every worker has handed its handler everything on its queue; then each
handler writes what it holds before its Stop returns. PeeringHandler.Stop
now waits for its loop's final write instead of running a second one
beside it.
Model: opus-5-5
bgp_peer_count grew only on OPEN messages, so it started at 0 while
updates arrived from hundreds of peers whose sessions were already up, and
it kept peers whose sessions had gone down. Now any message from a peer
adds it to the streamer's peer set, and a NOTIFICATION or a STATE message
whose state is down removes it without adding it first. The rule is in
updatePeers, called for every message.
Model: opus-5-5
Takes .golangci.yml, .dockerignore, .gitignore, .editorconfig, the
workflow and REPO_POLICIES.md from sneak/prompts 0653579, with this
repository's own entries after the shared content. Lint (golangci-lint
v2.14.0) and test are Dockerfile phases that script/lint and script/test
build alone with a new CACHEBUST value, keeping Go's and golangci-lint's
caches; the image build depends on both. make fmt and make fmt-check also
format the markdown with prettier, pinned in yarn.lock. The agent
guidance moves to AGENTS.md. The Go code is fixed for what the new
configuration finds, and the AS and prefix detail reads now return the
rows' error after their loops.
Model: opus-5-5
The streamer read the feed with a bufio.Scanner at its default limit of
64 KiB per line, so a longer line ended the connection and the updates sent
while it reconnected were lost. The scanner now accepts lines up to 1 MiB
(maxLineSize), well above an extended BGP message written out as the feed
writes it.
Model: opus-5-5
RIS sends no withdrawals for the routes of a peer whose BGP session goes
down, so routewatch kept them.
The streamer now hands STATE messages to the prefix handler. They are never
dropped for backpressure: one that finds the queue full is held and queued
first once there is room, and the handler's other messages are dropped
meanwhile, so none overtakes it. Nothing waits. On a down, the prefix
handler drops the peer's pending updates and its next flush deletes all the
peer's live routes before the batch's other writes, keeping the in-memory
counts exact. The live route tables are unique on peer and prefix, which
also finds a peer's routes.
Model: opus-5-5
When RIS Live ended the response normally, the reconnect loop stopped for good and the health check kept reporting the feed connected; a connection that stayed open but sent nothing blocked forever. Now only `Stop` ends the loop: any other end clears the connected flag and reconnects with the existing backoff. If no line arrives for 60 seconds, including while waiting for RIS Live to answer the request, the streamer drops the connection and reconnects. Tests use a local fake server. README "Reconnection" describes both.
Model: opus-5-5
Stopping the daemon while the RIS Live feed was flowing could panic with "send on closed channel" and skip the rest of the shutdown. Stop cancels the stream and closes the handler queues under the streamer's write lock, but the read loop checked for a stop only before parsing each line. It now checks again under the read lock it already takes just before handing a message to the queues, so it never sends to a closed queue. Stop also clears its cancel function and returns early when there is none, so a second call no longer closes the queues again. A test forces both cases.
Behaviour change: Stop before Start now does nothing.
Model: opus-5-5
The stats handlers ran the database query in a goroutine that sent on an
unbuffered channel. When the 4s request timeout won, nothing received and
the goroutine blocked forever; the status page polls every 2s, so once the
query exceeds the timeout every poll leaked one goroutine. Give both
channels capacity 1 so the send always completes.
The streamer started two ticker goroutines per connection that exited only
with the streamer's lifetime context, leaking two on every reconnect. Scope
them to a per-connection context cancelled when the stream call returns.
Tests force the stats timeout repeatedly and drive many reconnects, then
assert the goroutine count settles back to its starting value. The streamer
gains an internal endpoint field so a test can point it at a local server.
Model: opus-4-8
- Add GC statistics (run count, total/last pause, heap usage)
- Add BGP peer count tracking from RIS Live OPEN/NOTIFICATION messages
- Add route churn rate metric (announcements + withdrawals per second)
- Add announcement and withdrawal counters
- Add footer with attribution, license, and git revision
- Embed git revision at build time via ldflags
- Update HTML template to display all new metrics
- Add health check endpoint at /.well-known/healthcheck.json that
verifies database and RIS Live connectivity, returns 200/503
- Fix panic in streamer when encountering unknown RIS message types
by logging a warning and continuing instead of crashing
- Add DBMaintainer for periodic database maintenance:
- VACUUM every 6 hours to reclaim space
- ANALYZE every hour to update query statistics
- Graceful shutdown support
- Add Vacuum() and Analyze() methods to database interface
The stream stats were showing decompressed data sizes, not actual wire
bandwidth. This change adds wire byte tracking by disabling automatic
gzip decompression in the HTTP client and wrapping the response body
with a counting reader before decompression. Both wire (compressed) and
decompressed bytes are now tracked and exposed in the API responses.
Add comprehensive godoc comments to all exported types, functions,
and constants throughout the codebase. Create README.md documenting
the project architecture, execution flow, database schema, and
component relationships.
- Track the maximum queue length seen for each handler

- Helps identify which handlers are experiencing queue pressure
- Add gradual message dropping based on queue utilization
- Start dropping messages at 50% queue capacity
- Drop rate increases linearly from 0% at 50% to 100% at full
- Uses random drops to maintain fair distribution
- Helps prevent queue overflow under high load
- Add context-aware versions of all read operations in the database
- Update handlers to use context from HTTP requests
- Allows database queries to be cancelled when HTTP requests timeout
- Prevents database operations from continuing after client disconnects
- Display AS descriptions alongside AS numbers in format: Description (ASN)
- Truncate descriptions longer than 20 characters with ellipsis
- Increase container max width to 1600px for better display
- Enable word wrapping for AS path cells to handle long paths

- Replace all slog.Logger usage with logger.Logger throughout the codebase
- Remove verbose logging from database GetStats() method

- Wire up RoutingTable through fx dependency injection
- Update server to get live route count from routing table instead of database
- Remove LiveRoutes field from database.Stats struct

- Drop messages when at capacity instead of creating unbounded goroutines
- Track and log dropped messages (every 1000 drops)
- Remove nested goroutine spawning in handler loop
- Add metrics for dropped messages and active handlers
This prevents the memory usage from growing unboundedly when the
database can't keep up with the incoming BGP message stream. Messages
are dropped gracefully rather than causing OOM errors.
