config.New read the number and true/false settings with viper's
GetInt, GetFloat64 and GetBool. These return zero or false for a value
that does not parse, so a typo silently changed how the server ran.
config.New now parses these settings with strconv and checks the
duration settings with time.ParseDuration. Each number and duration
must also be finite and above zero. PORT and NEOIRC_HASHCASH_BITS may
be zero: port 0 lets the system pick a port, and 0 bits turns proof of
work off. A bad value makes config.New return an error naming the
setting and its value, and startup stops. Unset settings keep their
defaults.

Viper treats an environment variable set to the empty string as unset,
so an empty IRC_LISTEN_ADDR fell back to the :6667 default and the IRC
listener could not be disabled from the environment. The config now
reads IRC_LISTEN_ADDR with os.LookupEnv as well, so an empty value
disables the listener and an unset one keeps :6667. Viper's own switch
for this applies to every setting, so it is not used. New config tests
cover both cases, and README.md says how to disable the listener.

The default database URL asked for WAL mode with `_journal_mode` and
`_busy_timeout`, which the SQLite driver does not read, so the database
ran in rollback-journal mode. The default now uses the driver's
`_pragma=journal_mode(WAL)` and `_pragma=busy_timeout(5000)` parameters,
in one constant that both the config default and the database fallback
use. The database no longer sets its own busy timeout after opening, so
the URL's value applies. A new test opens a file database with those
parameters through db.New and checks the journal mode and busy timeout.
README.md's database text now matches, and an in-memory test database
drops the same ignored parameter.

Changes the Go module path from `git.eeqj.de/sneak/neoirc` to `sneak.berlin/go/neoirc`.
All occurrences updated:
- `go.mod` module directive
- All Go import paths across 35 `.go` files (107 import statements)
- All JSON schema `$id` URIs across 30 `.json` files in `schema/`
No functional changes — this is a pure rename of the module path.
`docker build .` passes clean (formatting, linting, all tests, binary build).

## Summary
Adds per-IP rate limiting to `POST /api/v1/login` to prevent brute-force password attacks.
closes#35
## What Changed
### New package: `internal/ratelimit/`
A generic per-key token-bucket rate limiter built on `golang.org/x/time/rate`:
- `New(ratePerSec, burst)` creates a limiter with automatic background cleanup of stale entries
- `Allow(key)` checks if a request from the given key should be permitted
- `Stop()` terminates the background sweep goroutine
- Stale entries (unused for 15 minutes) are pruned every 10 minutes
### Login handler integration
The login handler (`internal/handlers/auth.go`) now:
1. Extracts the client IP from `X-Forwarded-For`, `X-Real-IP`, or `RemoteAddr`
2. Checks the per-IP rate limiter before processing the login
3. Returns **429 Too Many Requests** with a `Retry-After: 1` header when the limit is exceeded
### Configuration
Two new environment variables (via Viper):
| Variable | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `LOGIN_RATE_LIMIT` | `1` | Allowed login attempts per second per IP |
| `LOGIN_RATE_BURST` | `5` | Maximum burst of login attempts per IP |
### Scope
Per [sneak's instruction](sneak/chat#35), only the login endpoint is rate-limited. Session creation and registration use hashcash proof-of-work instead.
## Tests
- 6 unit tests for the `ratelimit` package (constructor, burst, burst exceeded, key isolation, key tracking, stop)
- 2 integration tests in `api_test.go`:
- `TestLoginRateLimitExceeded`: exhausts burst with rapid requests, verifies 429 response and `Retry-After` header
- `TestLoginRateLimitAllowsNormalUse`: verifies normal login still works
## README
- Added "Login Rate Limiting" subsection under "Rate Limiting & Abuse Prevention"
- Added `LOGIN_RATE_LIMIT` and `LOGIN_RATE_BURST` to the Configuration table

## Summary
Adds username and hostname support to sessions, enabling standard IRC hostmask format (`nick!user@host`) for WHOIS, WHO, and future `+b` ban matching.
closes sneak/chat#81
## Changes
### Schema (`001_initial.sql`)
- Added `username TEXT NOT NULL DEFAULT ''` and `hostname TEXT NOT NULL DEFAULT ''` columns to the `sessions` table
### Database layer (`internal/db/`)
- `CreateSession` now accepts `username` and `hostname` parameters; username defaults to nick if empty
- `RegisterUser` now accepts `username` and `hostname` parameters
- New `SessionHostInfo` type and `GetSessionHostInfo` query to retrieve username/hostname for a session
- `MemberInfo` now includes `Username` and `Hostname` fields
- `ChannelMembers` query updated to return username/hostname
- New `FormatHostmask(nick, username, hostname)` helper that produces `nick!user@host` format
- New `Hostmask()` method on `MemberInfo`
### Handler layer (`internal/handlers/`)
- Session creation (`POST /api/v1/session`) accepts optional `username` field; resolves hostname via reverse DNS of connecting client IP (respects `X-Forwarded-For` and `X-Real-IP` headers)
- Registration (`POST /api/v1/register`) accepts optional `username` field with the same hostname resolution
- Username validation regex: `^[a-zA-Z0-9_\-\[\]\\^{}|` + "\`" + `]{1,32}$`
- WHOIS (`311 RPL_WHOISUSER`) now returns the real username and hostname instead of nick/servername
- WHO (`352 RPL_WHOREPLY`) now returns the real username and hostname instead of nick/servername
- Extracted `validateHashcash` and `resolveUsername` helpers to keep functions under the linter's `funlen` limit
- Extracted `executeRegister` helper for the same reason
- Reverse DNS uses `(*net.Resolver).LookupAddr` with a 3-second timeout context
### Tests
- `TestCreateSessionWithUserHost` — verifies username/hostname are stored and retrievable
- `TestCreateSessionDefaultUsername` — verifies empty username defaults to nick
- `TestGetSessionHostInfoNotFound` — verifies error on nonexistent session
- `TestFormatHostmask` — verifies `nick!user@host` formatting
- `TestFormatHostmaskDefaults` — verifies fallback when username/hostname empty
- `TestMemberInfoHostmask` — verifies `Hostmask()` method on `MemberInfo`
- `TestChannelMembersIncludeUserHost` — verifies `ChannelMembers` returns username/hostname
- `TestRegisterUserWithUserHost` — verifies registration stores username/hostname
- `TestRegisterUserDefaultUsername` — verifies registration defaults username to nick
- `TestWhoisShowsHostInfo` — integration test verifying WHOIS returns the correct username
- `TestWhoShowsHostInfo` — integration test verifying WHO returns the correct username
- `TestSessionUsernameDefault` — integration test verifying default username in WHOIS
- All existing tests updated for new `CreateSession`/`RegisterUser` signatures
### README
- New "Hostmask" section documenting the `nick!user@host` format
- Updated session creation and registration API docs with the new `username` field
- Updated WHOIS/WHO numeric examples to show real username/hostname
- Updated sessions schema table with new columns
## Docker build
`docker build .` passes cleanly (lint, format, tests, build).

## Summary
Implement SHA-256-based hashcash proof-of-work for `POST /session` to prevent abuse via rapid session creation.
closes sneak/chat#11
## What Changed
### Server
- **New `internal/hashcash` package**: Validates hashcash stamps (format, difficulty bits, date/expiry, resource, replay prevention via in-memory spent set with TTL pruning)
- **Config**: `NEOIRC_HASHCASH_BITS` env var (default 20, set to 0 to disable)
- **`GET /api/v1/server`**: Now includes `hashcash_bits` field when > 0
- **`POST /api/v1/session`**: Validates `X-Hashcash` header when hashcash is enabled; returns HTTP 402 for missing/invalid stamps
### Clients
- **Web SPA**: Fetches `hashcash_bits` from `/server`, computes stamp using Web Crypto API (`crypto.subtle.digest`) with batched parallelism (1024 hashes/batch), shows "Computing proof-of-work..." feedback
- **CLI (`neoirc-cli`)**: `CreateSession()` auto-fetches server info and computes a valid hashcash stamp when required; new `MintHashcash()` function in the API package
### Documentation
- README updated with full hashcash documentation: stamp format, computing stamps, configuration, difficulty table
- Server info and session creation API docs updated with hashcash fields/headers
- Roadmap updated (hashcash marked as implemented)
## Stamp Format
Standard hashcash: `1:bits:YYMMDD:resource::counter`
The SHA-256 hash of the entire stamp string must have at least `bits` leading zero bits.
## Validation Rules
- Version must be `1`
- Claimed bits ≥ required bits
- Resource must match server name
- Date within 48 hours (not expired, not too far in future)
- SHA-256 hash has required leading zero bits
- Stamp not previously used (replay prevention)
## Testing
- All existing tests pass (hashcash disabled in test config with `HashcashBits: 0`)
- `docker build .` passes (lint + test + build)

Enforce `QUEUE_MAX_AGE` and `MAX_HISTORY` config values that previously existed but were not applied.
The existing cleanup loop now also:
- **Prunes `client_queues`** entries older than `QUEUE_MAX_AGE` (default 48h / 172800s)
- **Rotates `messages`** per target (channel or DM) beyond `MAX_HISTORY` (default 10000)
- **Removes orphaned messages** no longer referenced by any client queue
All pruning runs inside the existing periodic cleanup goroutine at the same interval as idle-user cleanup.
### Changes
- `internal/config/config.go`: Added `QueueMaxAge` field, reads `QUEUE_MAX_AGE` env var (default 172800)
- `internal/db/queries.go`: Added `PruneOldQueueEntries`, `PruneOrphanedMessages`, and `RotateChannelMessages` methods
- `internal/handlers/handlers.go`: Added `pruneQueuesAndMessages` called from `runCleanup`
- `README.md`: Updated data lifecycle, config table, and TODO checklist to reflect implementation

## Summary
Fixes IRC client SPA issues reported in [issue #57](sneak/chat#57).
## Changes
### Server-side
- **Default MOTD**: Added figlet-style ASCII art MOTD for "neoirc" as the default when no MOTD is configured via environment/config
- **MOTD command handler**: Added `MOTD` case to `dispatchCommand` so clients can re-request the MOTD at any time (proper IRC behavior)
### SPA (web client)
- **`/motd` command**: Sends MOTD request to server, displays 375/372/376 numerics in server window
- **`/query nick [message]`**: Opens a DM tab with the specified user, optionally sends a message
- **`/clear`**: Clears messages in the current tab
- **Firefox `/` key fix**: Added global `keydown` listener that captures `/` when input is not focused, preventing Firefox quick search and redirecting focus to the input element. Also auto-focuses input on SPA init.
- **MOTD on resumed sessions**: When restoring from a saved token, the MOTD is re-requested so it always appears in the server window
- **Updated `/help`**: Shows all new commands with descriptions
- **Login screen MOTD styling**: Improved for ASCII art display (monospace, proper line height)
## Testing
- `docker build .` passes (includes `make check` with tests, lint, fmt-check)
- All existing tests pass with no modifications

- Change `Appname` from `"chat"` to `"neoirc"` in `cmd/chatd/main.go`
- Change default `DBURL` from `file:./data.db?_journal_mode=WAL` to `file:///var/lib/neoirc/state.db?_journal_mode=WAL` in both `internal/config/config.go` and the `internal/db/db.go` fallback
- Create `/var/lib/neoirc/` directory in Dockerfile with proper ownership for the `chat` user
- Update README.md to reflect new defaults (DBURL table, `.env` example, docker run example, SQLite backup/location docs)
- Remove stale `data.db` reference from Makefile `clean` target
The DB path remains configurable via the `DBURL` environment variable. No Go packages were renamed.
