Five defects traced to one fact: src/background/index.js read and wrote the
module-level `state` singleton in src/shared/state.js, which the MV3 service
worker never populates and which answered an unpopulated read out of
DEFAULT_STATE in silence. Every previous fix added a loadState() before the
access, and that is what produced the fifth: a load detaches the objects an
in-flight handler is holding.
So the reachability goes rather than a sixth call site.
The background now has its own storage layer, src/background/state.js:
getState() is a detached, normalized per-call read, and updateState() is a
queued read-modify-write whose read is one storage round trip ahead of its
write. Nothing in the background holds an in-memory copy of the profile.
- Every handler takes one snapshot and answers from it, including the address
it names: activeAddressOf(s) replaced a second, later storage read that
could disagree with the first.
- wallet_switchEthereumChain applies applyChainSwitchFields() (split out of
chainSwitch.js, which keeps the singleton path for the popup) inside
updateState() instead of calling onChainSwitch() on the singleton.
- The remembered site decision is a read-modify-write, not a load-mutate-save
around a prompt the user takes seconds to answer.
- backgroundRefresh() refreshes a private copy of the wallets and applies the
balances that came back by address, so it never publishes an object other
in-flight work holds, and a wallet added or deleted during the round trip
survives its write.
- The transaction attempt takes its chain id and its endpoint from the same
snapshot. They used to come from different moments, so a chain switch
committed in between moved the endpoint under an artifact already verified
against the old chain.
getProvider(rpcUrl, networkId) now REQUIRES the network id and validates it
against networks.js. That closes the cold-worker wrong-chain send at its shape
rather than at one call site: the hint used to default to currentNetwork() off
the unpopulated singleton, so the endpoint was the user's chain and ethers
fixed chainId at 0x1, and the wallet's own verifySignedTx then refused every
non-mainnet dApp send. refreshBalances(), lookupTokenInfo(), scanForAddresses()
and resolveEnsName() carry the id through; balances.js no longer requires
state.js at all.
The prohibition is enforced mechanically, not by review, and it is enforced by
the bundler rather than by a guess at what the bundler does. build.js keeps a
FORBIDDEN_INPUTS table of modules an entry point's bundle may not contain, and
assertNoForbiddenInputs() fails the build when esbuild's metafile reports
src/shared/state.js as an input of a background bundle, naming the import chain
from the metafile's own graph. That is the resolution the shipped bundle was
built from, so no specifier syntax, no hop and no resolution rule can slip past
it; Dockerfile:42 runs make build, so it holds in CI. A FORBIDDEN_INPUTS key
that matches no bundled entry point also fails, so the table cannot rot into a
vacuous pass.
A custom ESLint rule walks the CommonJS require graph from every src/background/
file and reports the same thing in the editor, before a full bundle. It matches
specifiers textually, so it is best-effort fast feedback and not the guarantee —
two earlier revisions of it shipped holes (a template literal, a dynamic
import(), a comment inside the call, a directory resolved through package.json
main). Those are covered now and pinned by
tests/backgroundStateLintRule.test.js, and the next divergence between a
hand-rolled matcher and a real bundler is caught by the build instead. A
computed specifier (require("../shared/" + "state")) is deliberately not
matched: esbuild cannot resolve it either, so it never reaches the bundle.
Reading a persisted field of the singleton before any load now throws
StateNotLoadedError instead of serving DEFAULT_STATE.
Test stubs: chrome.storage.local is a serialization boundary, and eight files
stubbed it with an aliasing get, so the object a module held and the object
"storage" held were one object — an assertion could pass on a build that never
wrote anything. Every test that drives real persistence now goes through
tests/support/storageStub.js, which structured-clones in both directions.

A hostile ERC-20's symbol() reached an innerHTML string unescaped, and neither
manifest declared default-src, so an attacker deploying a token with 1,000+
holders and airdropping one unit could render a full-viewport cross-origin
iframe over the wallet's own UI, on screens where the user types their
password.
escapeHtml is now a pure string replace over & < > " ' — the old version
round-tripped through textContent, which escapes neither quote, while already
being used inside data-copy="...". All 19 files in src/popup/views/ were
audited: beyond the reported symbol site, the explorer-supplied directionLabel
in all three transaction lists, wallet.name, addr.ensName, the blockie data:
URIs and two ad-hoc quote-only escapes were also unescaped. Explorer URLs now
go through one helper that percent-encodes the path segment.
Both manifests add default-src 'self', frame-src 'none', form-action 'none' and
base-uri 'none'. Three loosenings are pinned in tests/manifest.test.js and
justified in README.md: style-src 'unsafe-inline' (39 static style attributes;
Firefox implements neither style-src-attr nor 'unsafe-hashes'), img-src data:
(blockies), connect-src https: http: (user-configurable RPC).
Note frame-src 'none' blocks a frame loading, not the element existing, so the
zero-iframe assertion is a claim about the escaping alone; the test asserts the
element count and the literal rendered text separately, taking the count before
any click an overlay could intercept.
Verified: make check 39 suites / 811 tests, test-e2e 55/55 including the
WebAssembly-under-CSP assertion, test-e2e-firefox 8/8, zero CSP violations
asserted rather than merely unobserved. Reverting only balanceLine's
interpolation reproduces the attack as 2 iframes on the address screen.
Runs the real popup in a pinned containerized Chrome and fails on any uncaught
page error or console.error. Also fixes the two defects it caught: the missing
showView import in addToken.js and the missing addressDotHtml import in
transactionDetail.js.

## Summary
Fixes the view stack pop bug where pressing Back in Settings (or any view) always returned to Main instead of the previous view.
Closes [issue #134](#134)
## Problem
The popup UI had no navigation stack. Every back button was hardcoded to a specific destination (usually Main). The reported path:
> Main → Address → Transaction → Settings (gear icon) → Back
...would go to Main instead of returning to the Transaction view.
## Solution
Implemented a proper view navigation stack (like iOS) as already described in the README:
- **`viewStack`** array added to persisted state — survives popup close/reopen
- **`pushCurrentView()`** — pushes the current view name onto the stack before any forward navigation
- **`goBack()`** — pops the stack and shows the previous view; falls back to Main if the stack is empty; re-renders the wallet list when returning to Main
- **`clearViewStack()`** — resets the stack for root transitions (e.g., after adding/deleting a wallet)
### What Changed
1. **helpers.js** — Added navigation stack functions (`pushCurrentView`, `goBack`, `clearViewStack`, `setRenderMain`)
2. **state.js** — Added `viewStack` to persisted state
3. **index.js** — All `ctx.show*()` wrappers now push before navigating forward; gear button uses stack for toggle behavior
4. **All view back buttons** — Replaced hardcoded destinations with `goBack()` (settings, addressDetail, addressToken, transactionDetail, send, receive, addToken, confirmTx, addWallet, settingsAddToken, deleteWallet, export-privkey)
5. **Direct `showView()` forward navigations** — Added `pushCurrentView()` calls before `showView("send")` in addressDetail, addressToken, and home; before `showView("export-privkey")` in addressDetail; before `deleteWallet.show()` in settings
6. **Reset-to-root transitions** — `clearViewStack()` called after adding a wallet (all 3 import types), after deleting the last wallet, and after transaction completion (Done button)
### Navigation Paths Verified
- **Main → Settings → Back** → returns to Main ✓
- **Main → Address → Settings → Back** → returns to Address ✓
- **Main → Address → Transaction → Settings → Back** → returns to Transaction ✓ (the reported bug)
- **Main → Address → Token → Send → ConfirmTx → Back → Back → Back → Back** → unwinds correctly through each view back to Main ✓
- **Main → Address → Token → Transaction → Settings → Back** → returns to Transaction ✓
- **Settings → Add Wallet → (add) → Main** → stack cleared, fresh root ✓
- **Settings → Delete Wallet → Back** → returns to Settings ✓
- **Settings → Delete Wallet → (confirm)** → stack reset to [main], settings shown ✓
- **Address → Send → ConfirmTx → (broadcast) → SuccessTx → Done** → stack reset, returns to address context ✓
- **Popup close/reopen** → viewStack persisted, back navigation still works ✓

Replace display:none (hidden class) with visibility:hidden/visible for all
error, warning, and status message elements across the extension UI. This
prevents layout shift when messages appear or disappear.
Changes:
- helpers.js: showError/hideError now use visibility instead of hidden class
- index.html: all error/status divs use visibility:hidden + min-height
- confirmTx.js: warnings, errors, fee section use visibility
- approval.js: tx-error, sign-error, danger-warning use visibility
- addressDetail.js: export-privkey-flash uses visibility
- deleteWallet.js: delete-wallet-flash uses visibility
- addWallet.js: phrase-warning uses visibility
- receive.js: erc20-warning uses visibility
- addToken.js: add-token-info uses visibility
- settingsAddToken.js: settings-addtoken-info uses visibility
Delete src/shared/tokens.js and migrate all consumers to
src/shared/tokenList.js which has 511 tokens (vs ~150) sourced
from CoinGecko with on-chain verified decimals.
- prices.js: getTopTokenPrices now from tokenList
- transactions.js: KNOWN_SYMBOLS now from tokenList (3.4x more
symbols for spoof detection)
- send.js: KNOWN_SYMBOLS for token dropdown filtering
- approval.js: uses pre-built TOKEN_BY_ADDRESS map instead of
constructing its own from TOKENS array
- addToken.js: uses getTopTokens(25) for quick-pick buttons
(only top 25 shown, not all 511)
Major changes:
- Fetch token balances and tx history from Blockscout API (configurable)
- Remove manual token discovery (discoverTokens) in favor of Blockscout
- HD address gap scanning on mnemonic import
- Duplicate mnemonic detection on wallet add
- EIP-6963 multi-wallet discovery + selectedAddress updates in inpage
- Two-tier balance refresh: 10s while popup open, 60s background
- Fix $0.00 flash before prices load (return null when no prices)
- No-layout-shift: min-height on total value element
- Aligned balance columns (42ch address width, consistent USD column)
- All errors use flash messages instead of off-screen error divs
- Settings gear in global title bar, add-wallet moved to settings pane
- Settings wells with light grey background, configurable Blockscout URL
- Consistent "< Back" buttons top-left on all views
- Address titles (Address 1.1, 1.2, etc.) on main and detail views
- Send view shows current balance of selected asset
- Clickable affordance policy added to README
- Shortened mnemonic backup warning
- Fix broken background script constant imports
